He began by defining what he called the Present Dilemma in Philosophy'--a fundamental and seemingly irresolvable clash between two ways of thinking, the tough-minded empiricist determination to live and abide through the facts, versus the tender-minded tendency to a priori principles that appeal to rationalization. The term pragmatic first came into the United States around 1870. Neopragmatism seeks to correct what it regards as the epistemology of the mainstream's fundamental error which is that they mistakenly believe that thought and language mirror the world (Rorty 1982).
